As for the widely held idea that French women are thin because they smoke more, it's a myth. An estimated 21% of French women smoke, and 33% of French men, compared with 20% of U.S. women and 25% of men, the American Cancer Society says.

The French consider that eating habits and eating patterns are critical to a healthy relationship diet. The French are obsessed with food, not dieting. Eating is a social event to be shared with friends and family. They eat slowly and talk a lot. Eating too fast makes you eat too much. It takes 20 minutes before your brain registers fullness.

Slowing down allows the brain to register that the body has had enough. Smaller bites also show respect for the efforts of the chef. And we put our knifes and forks down often to talk with others sharing the meal. It is a matter of politesse. And so is waiting until everybody’s food has arrived before eating. We would not think of presenting the next course until everyone has finished the first..

A critical first step toward following the French regime is to turn the TV/computer off and answering machine on. Make time to sit down together and enjoy each other’s company.
