BMI height weight chart: Do you REALLY need to lose weight?

What is a height weight chart? How can it help you find out if you need to lose weight?

Suddenly, your jeans feel too tight.

Before they do the unthinkable - burst open at the back! - you are going to have to do something:

1. You can blame the tumble dryer...maybe they shrank?

2. You can live on in determined denial...and buy a new pair two sizes larger.

3. Or you can face the fact that all those marvellous cream cakes, chocolate sauces, butter-drenched croissants and litres of irresistible wine have left their mark on your waist and/or hips....

Use the BMI height weight chart to determine if you need to lose weight.

Before you set goals based on what you think you should weigh, make sure that you will actually benefit from losing weight. Plot your weight and height on these charts.

If you are in any doubt about whether you should lose weight, and if so, how much...

...weigh yourself first thing one morning, without clothes, and measure how tall you are against the wall.

Then plot those two measurements on the height weight chart below, and cross your fingers.

Or use this BMI calculator:

Your Ideal Weight

To remain healthy your BMI should be between 20 and 25.

Higher or lower puts you at risk of developing a weight-related illness.

Aim for a BMI of 22-23. Your ideal weight falls in this range. Do use your common sense. Be realistic in what you aim to achieve. And do hang on to your sense of humour...at all cost!

Common sense and a sense of humour are the same thing, moving at different speeds. A sense of humour is just common sense, dancing. ~William James

Waist and Hip circumference

Isn't a height weight chart accurate enough?

Recent research have shown that apart from your BMI, you should also take your waist and hip circumference into consideration

You need to lose weight if you have:

* A Waist-Hip ratio of higher than .8 for women and higher than 1.0 men

* An Abdominal Girth measurement of more than 35 inches in women and 40 inches in men

Realistic Expectations

Often our weight loss goals are based on what we think we should look like rather than what's reasonable and healthy for our bodies.

If you need to lose weight your diet needs to be realistic, providing you proper nutrition and satisfaction too. Crash diets are counter-productive as the body thinks it is fasting due to food shortage and reduces metabolism accordingly, and will burn muscle mass rather than fat as an energy source.

If you want the weight off permanently, be realistic about your weight loss goals. You didn't gain that weight overnight so itŽs going to take some time to lose it all.

Focus on making small changes one by one...

and eventually youŽll lose the weight AND youŽll be living a much healthier lifestyle.

The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. ~Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1891

I am afraid I have to agree. Personally, especially in the case of freshly baked bread, all resistance is futile.
